Activity Steps Up At Mayon

Standard

Last week the Philippine Institute of Volcanology urged the evacuation of the area around the flanks of Mayon in the Albany province as increased seismicity induced rock falls. An 8 km danger zone was put in place and an estimated 50,000 people have left the area.  Plumes of white smoke have been seen today, and tiltmeters have recorded inflation at the base since August indicating magma building under the surface.
